West Glacier or Apgar
First visits, Lake McDonald access, and a west-side airport arrival (FCA / GPI).
Apgar fills. West Glacier the town is the practical base. You will still drive to Many Glacier; that is a long day, not a sunset whim.

A short season, a famous road that may be closed, and a week that still works if Logan Pass is socked in.
Glacier is the park where fantasy itineraries go to die on a vehicle-reservation page. Going-to-the-Sun Road, Logan Pass, Hidden Lake, the Highline, Many Glacier, and a boat on two lakes can all fit in a caption. They do not fit in a week if the pass is still snowed in, the reservation window missed you, or a trail is closed for bear activity. A Park Week is five days on the west side with one Many Glacier day, two paid outings that do not require you to 'win' the Highline, and a written backup if Sun Road is not open end-to-end.
This hub is compiled from NPS Sun Road opening histories, vehicle-reservation rules that have changed by year, and the lodging split between West Glacier/Apgar and St. Mary/Many Glacier. It is not a trip report. We do not promise you will stand on the Highline.
Paid activities: a Red Bus (Jammer) tour and a boat on Lake McDonald or Many Glacier. Optional insurance is for prepaid in-park lodges and tours in a park with a real cancellation climate — still optional, never required.
Sources start with the National Park Service Glacier pages. If an operations detail here disagrees with NPS tomorrow, NPS wins.
The Park Week stack
Book in this order so the week still works if a tour cancels. Travel insurance is never required to enter Glacier or to follow this plan.
Five days is the minimum to arrive, do a west-side lake day, attempt Sun Road / Logan Pass, and reach Many Glacier without treating US-2 as a scenic afterthought. Four days drops Many Glacier. Six or seven days is the honest plan if you want Two Medicine and a second Many Glacier trail.
You will not complete the Highline to the Loop, Grinnell Glacier, and a full Many Glacier-to-Sun-Point photography circuit as 'the' week. Grinnell in particular opens late some years. This hub assumes day hikes and scenic roads, not a backcountry permit season.

split
The correct move if you can get two nights on the east side. Then this week becomes a split stay, which is stronger than five nights in Apgar.
In-park lodges book far ahead. If you cannot get Many Glacier lodging, St. Mary is the east-side substitute, not East Glacier (which is closer to Two Medicine).
alternate
When park-adjacent rooms are gone. You will add 30–45 minutes each morning. Accept it or change dates.
Do not stack a 5 a.m. Logan Pass attempt on top of a Kalispell hotel without looking at the clock honestly.
Activity 1
Half day to a full Going-to-the-Sun tour, depending on product
The Red Bus is Glacier's honest paid activity: you outsource driving on a road that punishes distracted visitors, and you still see the corridor if your personal vehicle reservation failed. Tours have their own access rules — read the current year's fine print.
Activity 2
About an hour, plus dock time; some products combine with a guided hike
A boat is the second activity that still works when a trail is closed. Lake McDonald is the west-side default; Many Glacier's boats are the east-side prize if you split stays. Do not book both and also a full-day Red Bus.
FCA to West Glacier is about 30–40 minutes. GPI (Glacier Park International is FCA) — do not confuse it with a 'park entrance airport.'
Apgar to Lake McDonald Lodge: short and potentially slow.
West entrance to Logan Pass: about 32 miles, and the miles are not the point. The point is whether the road is open and whether you are allowed on it today.
West Glacier to Many Glacier via US-2 and the east side: often 2–2.5 hours. This is a day trip from the west, which is why a split stay is better.
Two Medicine is closer to East Glacier. From the west, it is another long day — only do it if day 4 was not already a death march.
Waterton (Canada) as a Glacier afternoon
International border, different park, different time. It is a second trip or a longer hub.
The Highline as the week’s identity
It closes, it crowds, and it is exposed. Logan Pass plus Hidden Lake Overlook is already an alpine day.
Kayaking the North Fork as activity three
Different skill set, different access, different day.
